Skin

Am I a reflection of my skin?
Is the color all I am worth?
Does the tone define who I am?
Can it tell me how I should act as a man?

When I look in the mirror
Who do I see?
An African-American, black
Or simply me?

Is my blood red when I bleed?
Are my tears sincere when I cry?
Are my dreams diminished, a lie?
Will I fail before I try?

I am looking for more
Because I want to be sure
That I am more
Than the color of my skin
