Water | Artwork by Eric Christopher Jackson

WATER (2019)

08 X 12 INCH – $100
24 X 36 INCH – $380
40 X 60 INCH – $1,000

Water. Light. Shadow. A Mood. A Rhythm. The Texture created through a mixture of Emotions as the wind blows and the sun shines. Lost in the ebbs and flows of the River. The beautiful Personality of Nature is seen. Be still. -Eric Christopher Jackson

Artist Notes: The first piece of a Series is very important to me. It sets the tone for the entire Series. In this case, the other sixteen pieces. Yes, the other sixteen! Seventeen pieces are included in this Series, which make it the largest I’ve created to date.

Water, No.2 | Artwork by Eric Christopher Jackson

WATER, No.2 (2019)

08 X 12 INCH – $70
24 X 36 INCH – $280
40 X 60 INCH – $750

Often times, I look for Personality in a Scene/Composition. Something has to jump out at me. The image has to Speak. Simply because I don’t want to capture a picture of water. Anyone can take a picture of water with their phone or point-and-shoot camera. I have to capture a Work of Art.

Water, No.3 | Artwork by Eric Christopher Jackson

WATER, No.3 (2019)

08 X 12 INCH – $70
24 X 36 INCH – $280
40 X 60 INCH – $750

One of the challenges in creating this Series was to make sure none of the pieces looked too similar to another. I used Adobe Bridge to look at scenes side-by-side in small to large groups at a time. Ultimately, I viewed all seventeen pieces at once to also make sure there is continuity within the Series.

Water, No.4 | Artwork by Eric Christopher Jackson

WATER, No.4 (2019)

08 X 08 INCH – $70
20 X 20 INCH – $140
36 X 36 INCH – $445

Another obstacle when photographing something like this is making sure the natural light doesn’t shift too drastically. Which happens quite often outdoors. Some pieces were too bright entirely. Overexposed. I had to shoot this Series quickly because the sunlight was unpredictable. Practically standing in one spot, briefly taking note of how the light hit the water before capturing a few more images.

Water, No.5 | Artwork by Eric Christopher Jackson

WATER, No.5 (2019)

08 X 12 INCH – $100
24 X 36 INCH – $380
40 X 60 INCH – $1,000

During Editing, I began to imagine a frosty terrain. Mountains. Valleys. Plains. Covered by inescapable ice. There was no denying it. This land is frozen solid.

Water, No.6 | Artwork by Eric Christopher Jackson

WATER, No.6 (2019)

08 X 12 INCH – $130
24 X 36 INCH – $480
40 X 60 INCH – $1,300

I don’t always know when I’ve captured something ‘special.’ Not in the moment. I have a good gut feeling, but there’s no time to reflect because the moment is so fleeting. I only hope that during Editing, I’ll see something that blows me away. “No.6” was that scene. Although it’s similar to No.5, this piece feels nearly perfect in the balance of Light, Shadow, and Color.

Water, No.7 | Artwork by Eric Christopher Jackson

WATER, No.7 (2019)

08 X 12 INCH – $100
24 X 36 INCH – $380
40 X 60 INCH – $1,000

I do not create Series in order. I begin with the scenes that have to most potential and Edit around them. The tricky part is, my Editing Adjustments get better as I progress. Meaning, the best images may need to be adjusted with new Edits as I reach the end of the process.

Water, No.8 | Artwork by Eric Christopher Jackson

WATER, No.8 (2019)

12 X 08 INCH – $100
36 X 24 INCH – $380
60 X 40 INCH – $1,000

This scene reminds me of the Arctic. Extreme cold as far as the eye can see…

Water, No.9 | Artwork by Eric Christopher Jackson

WATER, No.9 (2019)

12 X 08 INCH – $100
36 X 24 INCH – $380
60 X 40 INCH – $1,000

Texture. I have photographed water before, but the Texture of the water has never looked this good or been this prolific within the scene. I absolutely love how the Texture gives this Series an Identity.

Water, No.10 | Artwork by Eric Christopher Jackson

WATER, No.10 (2019)

08 X 08 INCH – $120
20 X 20 INCH – $240
36 X 36 INCH – $750

The wind changed the pattern of the water. Suddenly, the thick blob of dark blue water approached. My heart nearly skipped a beat because I ‘knew’ this would look grand as a photograph. I decided to crop out the extra space to draw the viewers focus to this blue Shadow.

Water, No.11 | Artwork by Eric Christopher Jackson

WATER, No.11 (2019)

08 X 08 INCH – $70
20 X 20 INCH – $140
36 X 36 INCH – $445

More sunlight began to break through and the river continued to have a mind of its own. I was at the mercy of Nature, begging it to give me a little more time to capture more scenes.

Water, No.12 | Artwork by Eric Christopher Jackson

WATER, No.12 (2019)

12 X 08 INCH – $100
36 X 24 INCH – $380
60 X 40 INCH – $1,000

The wind began to come more frequently while offering gusts here and there. The river reacted accordingly.

Water, No.13 | Artwork by Eric Christopher Jackson

WATER, No.13 (2019)

12 X 08 INCH – $130
36 X 24 INCH – $480
60 X 40 INCH – $1,300

Less Shadows. More sunlight. No.13 became my favorite of the Series. It may be the most perfectly balanced capture. I have entered it into a few Competitions hoping to raise the eyebrows of Curators and Art Collectors at the very least.

Water, No.14 | Artwork by Eric Christopher Jackson

WATER, No.14 (2019)

12 X 08 INCH – $100
36 X 24 INCH – $380
60 X 40 INCH – $1,000

This scene feels split between Light dominating the top of the piece while it falls into deep blue Shadows.

Water, No.15 | Artwork by Eric Christopher Jackson

WATER, No.15 (2019)

08 X 12 INCH – $70
24 X 36 INCH – $280
40 X 60 INCH – $750

This could almost be mistaken for a massive mountain range. It has a feeling of wind blowing snow across the landscape. Suddenly, I realized that my Photography could be used to create something else out what is actually there without heavy Editing.

Water, No.16 | Artwork by Eric Christopher Jackson

WATER, No.16 (2019)

08 X 12 INCH – $70
24 X 36 INCH – $280
40 X 60 INCH – $750

There it is, again. That large, deep blue Shadow. Thick. Seemingly out of place compared to the Texture of the water around it.

Water, No.17 | Artwork by Eric Christopher Jackson

WATER, No.17 (2019)

08 X 12 INCH – $100
24 X 36 INCH – $380
40 X 60 INCH – $1,000

Finally, a deconstruction of the water opposed to the straight-forward approach taken in first shot of the Series. This final scene is almost Abstract because I slowed the Shutter Speed of the Camera causing the water to blur slightly. You can make out a splash of water, which speaks to how the wind began to pick up, again.

Well, I hope you enjoyed viewing my first Series of 2019 as much as I enjoyed creating it. Comparing all of the Series I’ve created to this point, “Water” has to be in the Top 3, if not ‘the best’ Series I’ve ever done. Now, the challenge is to top this one. 🙂

Yet, I didn’t plan on shooting this Series. I simply stumbled upon this area of the river, noticed how the sunlight hit the water, and the next thing I knew, voila. Actually, I was out capturing Video for a separate Project I’m trying to put together. My trusty Camera can do both: capture HD Video and High-Resolution Photography. I love it.

Best Regards,
Eric Christopher Jackson
